Don't wait until senior year to start searching for scholarships. Start in your junior year, and compile a list of all the scholarships that are relevant to your college goals. Examples might be: art scholarships, STEM scholarships, journalism scholarships, etc.
Include the application deadline, any special requirements and a link to the application website.
A good first place to start your list is with your school guidance counselor. They should be able to give you a lot of information about local and state-wide scholarship opportunities.
2. Apply for as many scholarships as you can.
Some scholarships can only help you pay for a year or two of tuition. The more scholarships you have better the chances of finishing your degree debt free. This will go a long way to getting you started on the right career path.
Apply for every scholarship program that you believe you qualify for. You may not win all of them, but you'll have a better chance getting a fully-funded college education, than if you don't.
Remember, you can also get scholarships to cover things like the cost of books and living expenses.
3. Sharpened skills and living your passion.
There are many organizations that grant scholarships that focus on an individual's skills, specific interest, ethnic culture, extracurricular and academic achievements or religious association. These scholarships represent a unique opportunity for students to benefit from a personal area of study or interest. These might include a fluency with languages, or a passion for eco-conservation.
4. Be punctual with the deadlines
Note the dates when you need to submit your applications. Being late with your submission is not advisable and will most likely result in you being disqualified from winning the scholarship.
5. Only rely on reputable sites and information to choose your scholarships.
There are quite a few scholarship scams out there. If someone wants to charge you a fee to apply, it's likely just a con to rob you of your hard earned money. The reason you're applying for scholarships in the first place is to save money on college.
Be persistent in your search for the right scholarships for your college goals and you'll be that much closer to getting the degree you want without drowning yourself in student debt.
